Kasha the three-legged dog
The email subject line read "Shepherd pup missing rear limb." A volunteer for the animal control shelter in Spokane, Washington, was asking if we could take a puppy named Kasha. The dog was missing her rear left foot, leaving her leg dangling. The volunteer said, "Her chance of adoption here is slim."
We had the shelter take the puppy to our veterinary surgeons in Spokane, who found that the dog's foot had been cut off cleanly – if Kasha had been caught in a trap or hit by a car, the remainder of the leg would have been much more damaged. They concluded that someone had chopped this little dog's foot off.
When she first arrived at the ranch, Kasha was also extremely skinny. She had obviously had a difficult life thus far. She liked people, but was also fearful, and often urinated submissively.

She's a whole different dog now! The veterinary surgeons recommended amputating the remainder of her leg. Now she jumps and runs and plays, and doesn't miss that leg at all. She's a happy girl with a big smile and a playful attitude. Her best friend at the ranch is Travis, our dog with a fused jaw, and the two of them romp and wrestle for hours with each other. And she's not shy anymore — she thinks she should be the leader of the pack!
