Widget the blind dog

Widget Main

Little blind Widget was on death row in an upstate New York shelter when we found out about her. She became our first cross-country rescue.

Through the efforts of a local animal group, Widget was pulled from the shelter on a Saturday morning and placed on a Delta Air Lines flight leaving Syracuse. After stops in Atlanta and Salt Lake City, she arrived in Missoula at 11:30 that night. The cost of the flight was only $153.00, which we thought was worth her life.

Appropriately enough, the New York group we worked with is named "Better Late Than Never Rescue."

This bundle of energy is a Beagle/Dachshund mix about two or three years old. She is completely blind from glaucoma in one eye and a detached retina in the other eye. Our vets say her condition is irreversible.

Widget is like having a blind Napoleon locked inside a Dachshund body wearing a Beagle uniform. She has no fear and just brims with confidence.

She thinks everyone else was put on earth to play with her. She'll stand in the center of the room, barking until another dog comes over to see what the fuss is about. She'll start jumping up and down, darting back and forth, and woofing. Sometimes Widget doesn't know it when the other dog wanders off, and she'll continue her antics in an otherwise empty room. It looks like she's playing with an imaginary friend.

Widget is now safe and enjoying her new life here. The rest of us are learning to adjust to living with a 6-inch high, bow-legged, 20-pound alpha female.
