Pappy’s Fund Launched!

Wow! We’re delighted to announce that the sanctuary has received more than $9,275 in donations for Pappy’s Fund, our emergency medical fund for the animals. The original challenge grant for Pappy’s Fund was $4,000, so we needed another $4,000 in matching donations to qualify. As you can see, our supporters generously surpassed that goal! Thank you to every one whose gifts made this possible. We are now launching Pappy’s Fund with more than $13,000!

We have also decided to maintain Pappy’s Fund as an ongoing emergency medical fund. Since medical emergencies are a fact of life when you care for as many animals as we do, we realized that we would always have a need for Pappy’s Fund. So we will continue to welcome contributions designated for this special purpose. Thank you!

The History of Pappy’s Fund

In July 2005, we were blessed with a $4,000 challenge grant offer from a wonderful supporter of the sanctuary. This generous donation is to establish an emergency medical fund for the animals.

At the same time we learned of this fabulous donation, our treasured old German Shepherd, Pappy, had just come home from the vet hospital. He had been struck first by pneumonia and then, suddenly, by meningitis. Our vets gave him a 20% chance of surviving. After 10 long days in the hospital, we finally brought our beloved boy back home to the ranch. He had beaten the odds, and every day we have with him now is a special gift.

Quick facts about Pappy's Fund
Purpose: Emergency medical funding
Matching funds raised to date:
$9,275.00

So when our supporter asked us how we would like to use the challenge grant, we immediately thought of an emergency medical fund and named it in Pappy’s honor.

Whenever we agree to take an animal, we plan on providing whatever medical care it may need for the rest of its life. And every year we have at least one unanticipated medical crisis that generates hefty vet bills. In Pappy’s case, the bill was nearly $2,000. Last year we spent more than $28,000 on veterinary care for the animals. It’s our biggest single expense by far.

This is why we are especially grateful for the challenge grant to establish Pappy’s Fund. It will help us cover the kind of medical emergency we had with Pappy.

The person who has offered the challenge grant wishes to remain anonymous. However, the gift is from the estate of her late son, who believed that humans were responsible for the stewardship of all animals. His untimely loss created a legacy that will directly benefit the sanctuary’s animals.
